This thesis examines US hegemony in military sphere following September 11 terrorist attacks. The aim of this thesis is to explore, using Gramscian approach, how US hegemony was created and how it functioned after September 11 as well as to evaluate the role of Turkey during these processes. The main assumption of this thesis is that in spite of increasing role of military force which characterized the shift from consent to coercion in US hegemony after September 11, the USA was able to gain approval for its military interventions from international community wıth the help of `War on Terror` political discourse and therefore retain its cultural and moral leadership. By emphasizing the importance of combating terrorism which was considered to be the biggest threat to international security and peace, and the necessity of providing stability to the Middle East region and Afghanistan in particular, the USA was able to unite public opinion around these common interests. After setting forth the teoretical framework in the First Chapter I will describe economic, military and cultural foundations of US hegemony. Then I will examine, how US hegemony was functioning after September 11. To show the shift from consent to coercion in the structure of US hegemony I will dwell on US military intervention in Afghanistan and Afghanistan's rebuilding process. Regarding the role of Turkey in supporting US hegemony I will argue about Turkey's position in NATO, Turkey's importance for the USA in the rebuilding of Afghanistan, and political discources related to these processes. In the end I will conclude that following September 11 terrorist attacks Turkey contributed to the spreading of the US discourse, focused on security, common interests and peace; prevented the emergence of counter-hegemony and therefore contributed to the prolonging of US hegemony.
