Özet

This study which deals with the relation of hip-hop culture to the conservative youth in Turkey analyzes the process in which a global phenomenon of youth undergoes a transformation and self-redefining process while becoming a medium of re-shaping local identities. In Turkey, Turkish rap and hip-hop gains a certain form parallel to social structure on the one hand, and it displays a heterogeneous structure based on the characteristics of the youth on the other. The conservative youth give meanings to hiphop in the context of their background and transfer it into their lives in accordance with their values. The purpose of the study is to understand the effect of hip-hop on the formation of the conservative youth?s identity who adopts it as a medium to convey the problems they face in the context of the changes occurred in the modernization processin particular. In this respect, in addition to theoretical discussions, the case is studied with holistic approach by means of interviews with young people in contact with hiphop culture, observations during various activities, and analyses of song lyrics. In the light of foregoing studies, it is found that the youth are not passive recipients motivated by simple imitation, but participants who build a culture by social and personal backgrounds and values.
