After the Turkish Constitution of 1960, strengthened social demands proposed to get closer to the public and the public concerns for agenda of Republican People's Party (CHP). The change was started under the name of civilization, and placed in politics as center-left politics in CHP after 1965. The centre-left politics began with İsmet İnönü, Chairman of CHP and gained strength with the advocacy of Bülent Ecevit, General Secretary of the party. While working in harmony with each other, İsmet İnönü and Bülent Ecevit, lived a dissidence in whether or not to give a minister to the government that will be formed after the Memorandum of 1971. As a result of this dissidence Bülent Ecevit resigned his position as General Secretary, but he continued to gain strength in administration of the party with the help of the party members who supported him. Meanwhile, İsmet İnönü and former General Secretary, Kemal Satır, who were uncomfortable with the empowerment of Bülent Ecevit, gathered the CHP council as V. Extraordinary General Assembly of CHP in May 5th -7th 1972 with the old delegates in order to change the party council before the XXI. Ordinary General Assembly. Despite the presence of İsmet İnönü, delegates voted for the confidence to the Ecevit's Party Congress proposal. On May 8th 1972, that act resulted in resignation of İsmet İnönü from his position, as Chairman of CHP, which he had been retaining for 33 years; and on November 4th 1972, resulted in resignation from CHP and his position as parliamentarian due to the fact that he had dissidence with the new administration of party. On May 14th 1972, Bülent Ecevit became the third Chairman of CHP. Even though there were some disagreements and separations inside the party in the new term of CHP after V. Extraordinary General Assembly, Bülent Ecevit, who carried out a strong policy for the needs of the public in 1973 general elections, was able to lead CHP as the first party from the elections.

Ortanın solu politikası, CHP Genel Başkanı İsmet İnönü ile başlamış, parti Genel Sekreteri Bülent Ecevit'in savunuculuğunda güçlenmiştir. Birbiri ile uyum içinde çalışan İsmet İnönü ve Bülent Ecevit, 1971 Muhtırası sonrası kurulacak hükümete bakan verilip verilmemesi konusunda görüş ayrılığı yaşamıştır. Bunun üzerine Bülent Ecevit genel sekreterlik görevinden istifa etmiş fakat kendisini destekleyenler sayesinde parti yönetiminde güçlenmeye devam etmiştir. Bülent Ecevit'in güçlenmesinden rahatsız olan İsmet İnönü ve daha eski Genel Sekreter Kemal Satır, Olağan XXI. Kurultay öncesi eski delegelerle Parti Meclisini değiştirmek amacıyla 5-7 Mayıs 1972'de V. Olağanüstü CHP Kurultayını toplamıştır. Kurultay delegeleri İnönü'ye rağmen Ecevit'in Parti Meclisine güvenoyu vermiştir.
