The aim of the thesis 'New Knowledge in the Light of the Goddess' is to analyze the significance of prehistoric female figures for the women's movement of the present. These figures displaying the childbearing and nurturing characteristics of women through the exaggeration of bodily features such as breasts, vulva and belly are mostly defined as goddess figures. These mainly palaeolithic and neolithic figures are supposed to be evidence for the belief that the world was created by a female being. Such stories of genesis being handed down to us through mythology and this belief is also existent in some of the indigenous cultures of today. Myths support the thesis that the efforts of the first human beings to make sense of themselves and their environment, thereby assigning a sacred role to the female, increased the social status of women. The female figures bear significance for the women's movement in the context of the struggle to create a common knowledge and identity. Those women who employ goddess figures today argue that the acknowledgment of the belief in the superiority of women in history will significantly change the consciousness of women and the society at large. This thesis is a result of comprehensive research on the impact of goddesses on women's new consciousness, the study of archeological discoveries and the significance of mythology in historiography, of women's debates concerning the search of identity, and of what is known about the superiority of women in matriarchal societies. Within this framework I have especially analyzed studies of European and US origin on the 'goddess movement'. The analysis leads to the conclusion that the belief in goddesses is acknowledged within the context of individual freedom of faith but that - in order to change the status of women today and social consciousness at large - efforts have to be shown on two levels. On the one hand the significance of women on the level of the cultural superstructure has to be emphasized, thereby making historical and prehistoric documents accessible to the society, on the other hand the awareness of the value of women's productive and reproductive labor has to be acknowledged.
