The objective of this study is to investigate the prevalence of energy drink, alcohol and substance use among university students; to explore whether there is a relationship between energy drink consumption and alcohol-substance use in university students or not and to evaluate effect of impulsiveness and sensation seeking on this relationship.Participants for this study included 2642 students who receive education at Trakya University during 2012-2013 spring mid-term. Sample group was selected by using weighted sampling technique for gender, faculties, classes and education in morning or evening. Besides Tunca Vocational High School where the students were having a distance learning program based on internet education; all faculties, institutes and vocational high schools of Trakya University were included in this study. The data of study have been derived from Addiction Profile Index (BAPI), Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, Zuckerman Sensation Seeking Scale and energy drink consumption questionnaire which were answered by the participants. The prevalance of use of alcohol and drug among university students in last year was; alcohol 65.1%, marijuana 10.5%, synthetic marijuana 6.1%, ecstasy 3.2%, heroin %0.6, cocaine 0.9%, crack 0.8%, pills as rohypnol-rivotril 1.1%, volatile substances 3.1%, pills as akineton-tantum-xanax 3.3%, amphetamine derived substances 0.8%, other substances as LSD-GHB 0.6% respectively. The percentage of any substance use other than alcohol in last year was 13.6%.When energy drink consumption features evaluated, it is seen that 59.9% of university students used energy drinks in last year and 26.4% of university students used energy drinks in last 30 days. Ratios of university students who used energy drinks mixed with alcohol in last year and last month were 29.2% and 13.8% respectively.Alcohol consumption in university students who used energy drinks in last year (78.8%) found significantly higher than the alcohol consumption in university students who didn?t use energy drink in the last year (44.6%) (p<0.001). Similarly substance use other than alcohol in the last year among university students was significantly higher in the group who used energy drinks during last year (19.6% to 4.5%) (p<0.001). Alcohol, marijuana and synthetic marijuana using frequencies were significantly higher in the university students who use energy drinks (p<0.001). Amount of alcohol consumption and hazardous alcohol use was significantly higher in university students who used energy drinks mixed with alcohol (p<0.001). Energy drinks which are consumed by mixing with alcohol increase the amount of alcohol consumption.Regression analysis performed to understand whether the positive relationship between alcohol-substance use and energy drink consumption is caused by personality traits such as impulsivity and sensation seeking or not. Analysis showed that when age, sex, previous history of any psychiatric or psychological treatment, impulsivity, sensation seeking and substance use variables were controlled, there is a significant relationship between energy drink consumption and alcohol use. Independent from impulsivity, sensation seeking and drug use energy drink consumption increases the risk of alcohol use three times.Findings from our study indicate that there is a significant association between energy drink consumption and alcohol/substance use among university students. University students who consume energy drinks frequently represents important target audience for alcohol and substance use disorders prevention studies.
