SUMMARYEvaluation of the fingerprint pores as a method of personal identification:PoroscopyFingerprints are among the most important evidences found at the crime scene.Since fingerprints can not be changed, remain unchanged, are unique and can beclassified, are among the most important evidences used in solving crimes.Poroscopy is a method which uses the relative locations of pores, which are thesweat gland openings on the skin surface forming the friction ridges found onthe palmar site of hands and feet.Poroscopy is a subsidiary subject of fingerprint identification. In the world especially in developed countries, fingerprints are being examinedon three levels. The 1st and 2nd level standards are being utilized in our country. However the3rd level comprising topics such as poroscopy and edgescopy is not beingapplied yet.In this study, I have examined the development and visualizing of pores withinked prints on different kinds of papers, the situation of pores developed withchemicals such as 5-methylthioninhydrin, cyanoacrylate and adhesive tapes withsticky-side powder which are used to visualize latent fingerprints, poredevelopment with powder dusting which is again used to visualize latentfingerprints, the effect of cyanoacrylate vapor exposure time on pores, the effectof the pressure applied while taking fingerprints with inks on the appearance ofpores have been investigated.Poroscopy which is being used in other developed countries, should also be usedin our country and this study has been conducted so as to make contribution tohuman rights and justice.Another purpose of this study was also to show the importance of poroscopy andits application in Turkey. With this study I have confirmed that poroscopy has an important place inidentification.Additinonally the percentage of fingerprints collected at crime scene which arenot considered suitable for classification and comparison have on average beenfound to be 35% and if we take into account the reliability of the classified andcomparable fingerprints investigated by the cross-examination procedure whichhas recently entered our judicial system, the importance of the study of poresand the use of pores together at the second level in establishing identificationhas been put forward.Key words: Fingerprint, Friction ridge, Identification, Pores, Poroscopy.
