We evaluated the efficacy of inferior turbinate (IT) surgery in septorinoplasty (SRP) and septoplasty (SMR) in terms of nasal passage flow.Sixty patients have been recruited according to the inclusion criteria of the study. The mean age was 27,3 years and 31 of them were female. None of the patients had previous nasal surgery, septum perforation, comorbid disease or also allergic sensitivity based on Prick test results.Nasal obstruction was the common complaint of all patients. The degree of nasal obstruction was evaluated utilizing NOSE scala subjectively whereas acoustic rinometry (AR) and anterior rinomanometry (ARMM) objectively before and 6 months after surgery consecutively. In AR, volume measurements in distances 0-3 cms and 2-5 cms from the nostril (VOL0-3,VOL2-5), minimal cross-sectional area (MCA), the distance of MCA from the nostril (MCAdist) were assessed for each nasal cavity;in ARMM, nasal air flow for one nasal cavity and both (R AKIM,L AKIM,T AKIM), nasal resistance (RRESIST,LRESIST,TRESIST) have been assessed seperately before and after the use of nasal decongestant. The sensation of nasal obstruction after SRP and SMR reduced subjectively. In AR, shift towards the nostril in MCAdist in SMR2 (SMR-IT lateralization), SRP0 (SRP without IT intervention) and SRP 1 (SRP-IT electrocautery) groups;nevertheless no significant increase in MCA in all groups. In ARMM, decrease in LRESISIT and TRESIST values in SMR1 group (SMR-IT electrocautery);decrease in LRESIST and RRESIST values in SRP0 (SRP without IT intervention) and SRP1 ( SRP-IT electrocautery) groups were observed respectively.Corelation analysis revealed that NOSE was highly correlated with VOL 0-3,VOL 2-5 and MCA dist values. It is assumed that anterior shift in MCAdist values in SRP groups with or without inferior turbinate intervention is due to the effect of nasal valve augmentation techniques. In SRP, significant increase in nasal resistance which is supposed to be due to lateral osteotomy even though IT electrocautery is performed. To conclude, this thesis made us thought that IT electrocautery is effective in nasal air flow increase, that lateralization of the turbinates should be performed with the combination of other techniques, that care should be taken to use nasal valve augmentation techniques in SRP which narrows the nasal pyramid and subjective assesment may be correlated with AR. Future studies designed with larger sample groups and longer follow-up time are needed for more reliable results.

Septorinoplasti (SRP) ve septoplastide (SMR) alt konka (AK) cerrahisinin nazal pasaj üzerindeki etkisini değerlendirdiğimiz bu çalışmaya, 60 hasta dahil edilmiştir.31'i kadın, 29'u erkek olan hastaların ortalama yaşı 27,3 idi.Burun tıkanıklığı şikayeti olan hastaların, geçirdiği nazal cerrahi, septum perforasyonu veya komorbid hastalık yoktu, prick testleri negatifti. Her hastaya burun tıkanıklığı şikayetlerini, NOSE skalası üzerinde belirtmeleri istenmiştir.
