In this study, a packet pursuing system is developed based on the measurement of signal strength using low-power radio apparatus. Pursuing is achieved based on the formulated relationship between the measured radio-wave signal strength and the physical distance. The hardware of the system consists of a battery operated low-power radio mounted within the packet to be persuaded, which works as a transmitters, and the several receivers that are placed at the designated points in an area where this system will be used. The receivers are responsible from measuring the signal strengths coming from the packets. By the help of the wireless network formed by the receivers, all the measurements are collected and transferred to a center unit where the location of the packet can be determined. The described method which allows pursuing of many packets from a single monitoring center has been tested in a real factory environment and now it is in service. In the work, the other parameters, which affect the radio-wave signal strength, are also studied; from these, the ambient temperature and the relation between the dependent humidity and signal strength has been studied, and their effects on the measurement error are evaluated. Extra protective measures are taken to minimize the effects of disturbances on the measurement of signal strength such as echoing of signals and some obstructions coming into the way of signals during measurements.Even though the developed system has a limitation for exact location finding, it is still very attractive solution for use in the large work places when many factors such as the manufacturing and operating cost of the system, its applicability to all most everything such as work personnel, the tools, the raw materials, and the products are considered. We believe that the developed system will allow significant amount of saving in workman hour cost and also greatly speed up the overall production.
