Özet

POLITICAL PARTICIPATION OF TURKS IN NETHERLANDS 1964 was the first comprehensive migration of Turks to Netherlands along with the establishment of laboring contracts, and for the past fifty years Turks have been integrated into the Dutch population. Although the first Turks to go to Netherlands were seen as guests and this migration evolved from a temporary to a permanent one. Together with this sense of permanence the Turks in Netherlands have also long requested to be treated as equals and be accepted as citizens. Such labels as guests, migrants or foreigners have fallen out of favor and equality and the request for the migrants to be recognized as citizen, becoming integrated into the political system has been a very important element. Being a part of politics in Netherlands has been an important sign of transition from being a migrant to a citizen. This study aims to tie these aspects together by focusing on the political activities of Turks in Netherlands. The data for the study in Netherlands has been collected by interviewing Turks residing in Netherlands. The results of the data collected has suggested that the attitudes of Turk living in Netherlands see themselves as permanent residents, and in this direction have indicated that they see themselves as becoming integrated into the social and political systems. However, this situation is seen more the case in the third generation Turks. Second and third generation Turks see themselves as having a social identity and value as well as being more conscious in participating in the political field.
