We started this thesis, which is about `The Republican Project of Constructing Republican Woman?, with mentioning the place of women in Ottoman modernization, which we accepted as the antecedent of Republican modernization. The concepts of modernization, modernity, Westernization are introduced and followed by mentioning the gender roles in the Ottoman and the Republic. We thought that the social, cultural and political boundaries of the structure in which women were situated is important to determine the boundaries of the thesis? chapters. While Western modernity includes radical change and freedom, it excludes women because the West, which is the role model of Turkish modernization, has patriarchal mentality. Hence, the sacred and symbolic mother of country and nation is always seen as dangerous as a woman. In addition, the literature reviewed selected from the sources that tell the history of women different from the history written by men. Moreover, special care was taken in order to read the literature through the idea of women who were pushed out of the circle with their abnormal thoughts and actions rather than through the doctrines of official discourse about the Republican Woman. While we were examining the Republican Woman, we analyzed the official history discourse and critiques of it. These analyses led us to the following: The Republic created modern changes in women?s outlook yet it could not relieve the masculine pressures on women. On top of that, it imposed the mission of developing the country them. In addition, the argument present in official history discourse that women were granted rights without struggle was refuted as a result of examining historical evidences. However, we also argue against the critiques of official history discourse who argue that if women continued their struggles, they could have these rights without the Republic. This thesis argues that women had their rights with the help of suitable social and political environment that the Republic provided, while acknowledging that it could not escape from its masculine mentality. In other words, women had been struggling for rights since Ottoman Women?s Movement. In contrast to its claim, the Republic did not give rights to women without women?s demand. Women got these rights by themselves and the Republic provided them with the suitable terrain to use their rights. Keywords: The Republican Woman, Republic?s Founding Elite, Modernization, Patriarchy, Gender.

Anahtar Kelimeler: Cumhuriyet Kadını, Cumhuriyet'in Kurucu Eliti, Modernleşme, Ataerkillik, Toplumsal Cinsiyet.
