This is a randomized controlled trial to investigate effects of the technology-based breastfeeding program for adolescent mothers on their infants' growth. The second aim of the study was to determine the effects of the program on adolescent mothers breastfeeding self-efficacy, breastfeeding success and anxiety levels. The study sample consisted of a total of 31 primipara adolescent mothers and their infants, 16 of which were in intervention group (IG) and 15 were in control group (CG). The mothers in the IG underwent an eight-week program. In the 1st week, the mothers received breastfeeding education through face to face method and an electronic booklet (e-booklet) was installed on their android phones. In the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th weeks, telephone interviews on breastfeeding were arranged and done with the mothers, and an SMS on breastfeeding was sent to them once a week. Additionally, a 24/7 consultation via telephone was provided. The study data were collected using a descriptive data form, follow-up forms for baby's physical growth and breastfeeding, the Postpartum Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale (PBSES), the Spielberger State Anxiety Inventory (STAI), the LATCH Assessment Tool, and a process evaluation form for the breastfeeding program. The data were analysed using chi-square analysis, Mann-Whitney U test, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Before starting the study, ethics committee and institution permits were obtained, and the study was carried out with the adolescent mothers who had written consent. According to the study results, at the baseline (1st follow-up), no difference was found between the IG and CG with regard to descriptive characteristics of the adolescent mothers and the infants, and breastfeeding characteristics and scale scores of the mothers (p > 0.05). At the 3rd follow-up, age/sex specific weight and height z-scores were significantly higher for the infants in the IG than for those in the CG (p < 0.05). At the 2nd and 3rd follow-up, the number of adolescent mothers who were feeding their infants only with breast milk was found higher in the IG (p = 0.001). Analysing the scores on the PBSES and the LATCH tool with higher scores indicating greater self-efficacy and greater breastfeeding success, we found at the 3rd follow-up that the mean scale score on self-efficacy was higher for the adolescent mothers in the IG than for those in the CG, and at the 2nd-3rd follow-up, the mean scale score on breastfeeding success was higher for the adolescent mothers in the IG than for those in the CG (p = 0.001). According to the scores on the STAI with higher scores indicating greater anxiety, there was a lower mean STAI score at the 3rd follow-up for the adolescent mothers in the IG than for those in the CG (p = 0.001). The use of technology by nurses who provide breastfeeding education to adolescent mothers may increase breastfeeding success and support the healthy growth of infants. The technology-based breastfeeding program provided to adolescent mothers is a significant nursing intervention for the health of both mothers and their infants.
