In this research, high school students' conceptions of function and function related sub-concepts have been examined in the context of theoretical thinking theoretical framework. Theoretical thinking model has three components which are reflective, systemic and analytical thinking. The analytical thinking component provides students with the opportunity to explain the mathematical language related to the function concept and the ability to use different representations of the function concept and make the transition between these representations. The systemic thinking component is related to the students' ability to use the descriptive features of the function concept and their relations with other concepts. On the other hand, reflective thinking component demonstrates the compentence of students to reflect their own solution by displaying a researching attitude towards questions about the function concept.In this study, which is a case study, one of the qualitative research approaches, the participants have been determining using the theoreticial sampling method and the data of the study were collected through semi-structured interview. From data analysis, theoretical thinking behaviors which are used by Nnadozie (2002) and Sierpiska, Nnadozie and Oktac (2002) for algebra were adapted to the function concept fort his study. When the 11 high school senior students answers given to the open-ended questions about the definition and types of function during the interview have been eveluated, according to the participants' ability to use the theoretical thinking behaviors, six different situations have emerged as reflective and systemic, reflective and analytic, analytic and systemic, reflective-systemic-analytic, only analytic and none.It has been seen that students who are able to use the reflective thinking behaviors adequately, while answering a question, go out of routine procedures try different options for solving problem and are aware of the true value of mathematics and function concept, but the students who couldn't use it tried to reach a solution by using the information given as a practical way, stopped to solve the question when it was forced or didn't take into a account the alternative solutions.It has been seen that the students who couldn't use the systemic thinking component of theoretical thinking adequately decided according to missing or wrong criteria when deciding whether a given expression is a function or not and couldn't associate the function concept with other concepts. In addition, it has been found that they couldn't use the features of the function, they could make mistake in determining the type of function, and the solutions didn't go beyond the operational dimension, especially when they answer open-ended questions, they comment on a single answer of the question and not evaluate the possible results.It has been seen that students who couldn't use the analytical thinking behaviors had difficulties in using mathematical language and representations for function concept, failed examining whether a given expression is a function or passing from one representation to another representation, while using the descriptive properties behaviors didn't take into account quantitative and logical connectors of variables.The findings obtained in this study have been discussed by considering the effect of students' ability to use theoretical thinking skills on their understanding of function concept, strenghts and weaknesses of theoretical thinking and literature on the concept of function.Key Words: Function concept, theoretical thinking, reflective thinking, systemic thinking, analytic thinking, high school students, conception.

Bu araştırmada, lise öğrencilerinin fonksiyon ve fonksiyonla ilişkili alt kavramlara yönelik anlayışları teorik düşünme teorik çerçevesi bağlamında incelenmiştir. Teorik düşünme modelinin yansıtıcı, sistemik ve analitik düşünme olmak üzere üç bileşeni bulunmaktadır. Analitik düşünme bileşeni öğrencilerin fonksiyon kavramıyla ilgili matematiksel dili ve fonksiyon kavramının farklı temsillerini kullanabilme ve bu temsiller arasındaki geçişi yapabilme yeterliğini açıklama olanağı sunmaktadır. Sistemik düşünme bileşeni öğrencilerin fonksiyon kavramının tanımsal özelliklerini, diğer kavramlarla olan ilişkilerini kullanabilme yeterlikleri ile ilgilidir. Yansıtıcı düşünme bileşeni ise öğrencilerin fonksiyon kavramıyla ilgili sorularda araştırıcı bir tutum sergileyerek kendine özgü bir çözümü yansıtabilme yeterliklerini ortaya koymaktadır.Nitel araştırma yaklaşımlarından durum çalışmasının kullanıldığı bu çalışmada, teorik örnekleme yöntemi kullanılarak çalışma grubu belirlenmiş ve çalışmanın verisi yarı yapılandırılmış mülakat yoluyla toplanmıştır. Veri analizi için Nnadozie (2001) ve Sierpinska, Nnadozie ve Oktaç'ın (2002) cebir kavramı için kullandığı teorik düşünme davranışları bu çalışma için fonksiyon kavramına uyarlanmıştır. Lise son sınıfta okuyan 11 öğrencinin fonksiyon tanımı ve çeşitlerine ilişkin açık uçlu sorulara mülakat sırasında verdiği cevaplar değerlendirildiğinde, katılımcıların teorik düşünme davranışlarını kullanabilme yeterliklerine göre yansıtıcı ve sistemik, yansıtıcı ve analitik, analitik ve sistemik, yansıtıcı-sistemik-analitik, sadece analitik ve hiçbiri olmak üzere 6 farklı durumun ortaya çıktığı görülmüştür.Yansıtıcı düşünmeye ait davranışları yeterli derecede kullanabilen öğrencilerin bir soruya cevap verirken rutin prosedürlerin dışına çıkıp sorunun çözümüyle ilgili farklı seçenekler denediği, matematiğin ve fonksiyon kavramının gerçek değerinin farkında olduğu; kullanamayan öğrencilerin ise daha çok pratik yol olarak verilen bilgileri kullanarak çözüme ulaşmaya çalıştığı, zorlandığı zaman soruyu çözmeyi bıraktığı ya da alternatif çözümleri hesaba katmadığı görülmüştür.Teorik düşünmenin sistemik düşünme bileşenini yeterli derecede kullanamayan öğrencilerin verilen bir ifadenin fonksiyon olup olmadığına karar verirken eksik ya da yanlış ölçütlere göre karar verdiği, fonksiyon kavramını diğer kavramlarla ilişkilendiremediği görülmüştür. Ayrıca fonksiyona ait özellikleri kullanamadıkları, fonksiyonun türünü belirlerken hatalar yapabildikleri ve yapılan çözümlerin işlemsel boyuttan öte gitmediği, özellikle açık uçlu soruları cevaplarken sorunun tek bir cevabı üzerinden yorum yaptıkları, olası sonuçları değerlendirmedikleri ortaya çıkmıştır.Analitik düşünme davranışlarını kullanamayan öğrencilerin ise matematiksel dili ve fonksiyon kavramına yönelik temsilleri kullanırken güçlükler yaşadığı, verilen bir ifadenin fonksiyon olup olmadığını incelerken ya da bir temsilden başka bir temsile geçerken başarısız oldukları, fonksiyona ait tanımsal özellikleri kullanırken değişkenlere ait niceleyicileri ve mantıksal bağlaçları dikkate almadıkları görülmüştür.Bu çalışmada elde edilen bulgular öğrencilerin teorik düşünme becerilerini kullanabilme yeterliklerinin fonksiyon kavramını anlayışlarına etkisi, teorik düşünmenin güçlü ve zayıf yönleri ve fonksiyon kavramıyla ilgili literatür ele alınarak tartışılmıştır.Anahtar Kelimeler: Fonksiyon kavramı, teorik düşünme, yaratıcı düşünme, sistemik düşünme, analitik düşünme, lise öğrencileri, anlayış.
