Over the years, several studies have underlined the effects of probiotics on cariogenic bacteria in mouth as they have important roles among general health. The aim of our study was to evaluate the changes in the salivary and plaque counts of bacterias and plaque grade of slime in caries active children with the oral administration of kefir, a probiotic containing various strains of LB spp, compared with kefir free supplements.24 volunteer children between 5-8 years of age were randomly divided into 4 groups to drink kefir for 6 weeks: Group A, caries active children without any treatment (n= 8), group B, caries active children whose dental treatment had finished before the experiments (n=8), positive control (dfs ?8) (n=4), and negative contol (dfs=0) (n=4). Group A and B were divided into two subgroups (A1,A2, B1 and B2) according to the kefir types (commercial kefir and fermented kefir). The salivary and plaque counts of MS and LB spp were measured by using dip-sliide method. The salivary and plaque MS and LB spp grade of slime were measured by modified microtitre plate test. To assess the MS and LB counts, saliva and plaque samples were taken from all subjects at the beginning of the study, after dental treatment and after drinking kefir. The results were statistically analyzed with Kruskall- Wallis H test for comparisons between the groups and Wilcoxen test for comparisons within the groups. After the dental treatments, salivary and plaque counts of MS and LB spp were decreased significantly (p<0,05). The results taken after drinking kefir compared with the beginning values, salivary and plaque counts of MS and LB were decreased significantly (p<0,05), these results when compared with the results of after dental treatments, only two groups in the salivary levels were increased, other salivary and plaque levels decreased but these results are not statistically significant (p>0,05). After dental treatments, the saliva and plaque grade of slime values were decreased significantly on plaque (p<0,05), but not significantly on saliva (p>0,05). At the end of drinking kefir, when the results as compared with the beginning values, salivary grade of slime values were decrased in all groups but not significantly (p>0,05), as for MS values of plaque were increased not significantly (p>0,05), but LB values of plaque were decreased not significantly (p>0,05).In future, long term and large groups study design is needed to evaluate the effects of the probiotics on the effect of the cariogenic bacteria.
