Dr. Naci İSPİRIn this study, the formation phases of consumption culture, and the director indirect contribution of advertisements to this formation process occurredtogether with westernization movements in Turkish society are examined in atheoretical frame. In the first chapter of the study, (a) the term ?consumption? washandled in relation with capitalist economic system; (b) the effect of consumptionculture and values on social life were examined, and (c) in this context, theappearance of consuming society and its main characteristics were studied ingeneral. In the second chapter, a transition to the term ?advertisement? havinggreat contribution to the formation and development of consumption culture andsociety was made; and the historical development of advertisement both in theworld and Turkey is surveyed from a critical point of view and also thetransformation of advertisement understanding, mainly in the language, was triedto put forth. In the third chapter, the relation of advertisement and consumptionculture is searched in the frame of manipulation of needs the main theme of thestudy, under the title of the development of consumption culture andadvertisements in the axis of westernization? is studied by taking the term?westernization? firstly and then oriented to periods as Ottoman and TurkishRepublic.
