Temporomandibular disorders are the pathologies of temporomandibular joint, jaw muscles, or both. One of the most important factors affecting temporomandibular disorders is the occlusal vertical dimension changes, but the mechanism of joint disturbance of occlusal vertical dimension changes (loss / decrease or increase) is not fully known. The purpose of this study is to assess the relationships between the occlusal vertical dimension changes and the temporomandibular disorders. The interaction between the occlusal vertical dimensions and temporomandibular disorders versus tooth wear and patient psychology are also assessed in this study. This study has been carried out by evaluating the questionnaire forms and clinical examination results of 114 individuals who have applied to the clinic and accepted the inclusion criteria. The weight and height information of the patients were recorded and the results of Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI Form Tx-1 and Tx-2) and Research Diagnostic Criteria/Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) are filled up for each patient. Clinical examinations were performed with the help of the RDC/TMD Clinical Examination Form. Dentition and occlusion were also examined and upper and lower alginate measurements were taken from each patient to evaluate wear on the gypsum model. Clinical examination finalized with an extraoral examination. In this study, it has been determined that the occlusal vertical dimension is low in 35.09% of the individuals and it is high in 18.42% individuals in Turkish society. The vertical dimension has been proven to be significantly related to the gender, body mass index, marital status, and depression, and it has been found to cause susceptibility to jaw movement pain. In contrast to the common expectations, there has been no statistically significant relationship found between the vertical dimension and the tooth wear. This can only be explained by the dentoalveolar compensation theory. It has been suggested that tooth abrasion has been proven to be significantly related to temporomandibular joint disorders, age, body mass index, marital status and smoking status and susceptibility to muscle pain.
