The rapid aging of the world's population brings with it a number of consequences and possible problems. For this reason, aging is a subject that needs to be addressed in many perspectives such as social, cultural, political, economic etc. This doctoral dissertation deals with present situation, daily life, life satisfaction and family relations of the people over 65 years old, who live in a megacity like Istanbul on the basis of the ageism. During the field work of this study, 45 in-depth interviews were held in Şişli and Sancaktepe districts. Findings from these interviews can be grouped under three main headings. Firstly, it is found that the aging process, as one natural part of life, such as being born and growing, is not experienced by every individual in the same way, and lived conditions such as gender, socio-economic status, educational level, place of residence, migration story, etc. shape the aging process. The `multi-layered` and `multiple burden` perspective, focusing on the different factors that affect aging process and interrelationships between these factors, which is also the main theme of the dissertation, will enrich the aging studies. Secondly, given all the lived experiences, it is clear that the concepts of widowhood for women and retirement for men have important influences in the aging process. In fact, it can be said that both phenomena are milestones in people's lives. A woman who was dependent on her husband economically and socially for a long time, feels loneliness and economic impoverishment when her husband dies, increasing her probability to experience ageism. Retirement is a break from an active business and social life, a weakening of the economic situation and a loss of power in the public sphere, leading to the isolation of men in the society. The third important result is the effect of the social and cultural structure on ageism. Traditional society structure, where family and neighbourhood relations are strong, protects the elderly by putting them in a respectful place. It has been observed that this situation reduces the chances of suffering from ageism. According to this, in Sancaktepe, having a traditional society structure, it is revealed that the chances of elders suffering from ageism in lower socioeconomic status are much lower than the ones from upper and middle socio-economic status in Şişli, which has a relatively modern and individualized society structure.
