The delivery of goods efficiently from supplier/s to local retailers and end-users at a minimum cost is a major problem in a distribution network. In this research, the distribution network design problem integrating multiechelon inventory and transportation costs for a company in food secteur who produces and delivers goods to more than 10.000 end-users in 50 different cities in Turkey, is studied. The trade-off between inventory, shipment and facility operating costs are considered. The problem is to determine how many warehouses to set up, their locations, how to serve end users/retailers through these warehouses and the optimal inventory policies for the warehouses and retailers. The objective is to minimize the total multiechelon inventory, transportation and facility operating costs. The problem is divided into two sub-problems: determining and locating the warehouses to have minimum distribution cost and then calculating the optimal order cycles for every warehouse and retailer. The linear programming algorithms available for the optimisation of the routing of shipments in multi-warehouse, multi-destination systems cannot be applied directly to general and large distribution networks, due to the large number of variables and nonlinearities involved. In this research, a heuristic for locating warehouses is used. The heuristic approach offers significant advantages to solve this class of problems such as, providing flexibility, feasibility for large-scale problems and economical computing time. Finally, the inventory policy problem is first solved as a simpler problem called the relaxed problem, next by rounding off the relaxed problem?s solution, a feasible solution is obtained.
