After the Second World War, there were reasons for various new developments among the ruined states. Among these was the idea of forming the European Union. As many publications have made clear, the reason for founding the European Union was to develop an economic union and a strong Europe. As well as economic recovery, another goal that was envisaged was the economic sustainability of nations. Of course, while providing free trade, other cooperation was also achieved. Under the umbrella of turning different customs policies into a single customs—in other words, of providing free trade of goods in Europe—the idea of a Customs Union came to life. The formation and the development process of the Customs Union was a turning point in the trade activities of the European Union. In trade both within Europe itself and with the candidate countries, the new approaches brought by the Customs Union had effects in various fields. At the head of these were the economic effects. The big advantages, which accrued to various countries because of the Customs Union, put Turkey in a difficult position. Thus followed years in which various legal and economic restructurings were instituted in order to first solve problems that were faced in the wake of the newly formed Customs Union, but ultimately to bring Turkey into conformity with the Union itself. The pace of globalization has made it impossible for Turkey to ignore or to cut off its close ties with Europe. The restructurings that were made before joining the Customs Union had a negative effect on many sectors, including the forest products industry. Turkey is signing of the Customs Union Treaty and the recent privatization of the forest products industry has made both positive and negative structural and economic contributions. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the effects of Turkey's forest products foreign trade within the Customs Union and to use experiences in this sector to our benefit in the following years. The method used to research the effects of the Customs Union on the forest products international trade was to examine the literature on the issue by scanning both local and foreign sources. Through this method—examining economic and social sources using numerical data—the pre- and post-Customs Union international trade in forest products is analyzed. Because of this analysis, it can be surmised that the foreign trade in timber has increased but in the most recent phase, what has emerged is that because of different demands or reasons the level of exports and imports has changed. In addition, the political, economic and social changes have had a direct impact on trade. The crises affecting Europe have affected all sectors and have had a negative impact too on the forest products industry. Because of this, investments have decreased in specific periods, but in the past 5 years, there has been a slight increase.
