Both the Hungarian and the Turkish Turanian movements emerged as heterogeneous formations themselves, having different forms and representative groups at the same time, but they also changed with the elapse of time. The essential difference between Hungarian Turanianists and their Turkish counterparts is that the people they wished to unite culturally or perhaps, politically, were essentially different. While the ultimate goal of Hungarian Turanianists was to unite the peoples living in the vast terrains that extended from Hungary to Japan and being classified as Finno-Ugric, Turk or Tatar, Turkish Turanianists were exclusively concerned with peoples considered Turkish. Although both movements put a strong emphasise on race, there were essential differences in the assimilatory understanding of Turanianism of some representatives vis-â-vis the strongly blood orientated discriminatory attitudes of others. From this aspect there is a remarkable similarity between the assimilatory programme of the most important Hungarian pan- Turanianist movement, the Hungarian Turanian Society of 1910-1944 and Ottoman Turanianism; while German Nazism played a key role in the increasing racism of both later Hungarian Turanian groups emerging in the 1930s and the contemporaneous movements in Turkey. Russophobia was seminal in the efforts of both Hungarian and Turkish Turanianism to attain legitimacy. This anti-Russian sentiment, however, continued well into the times following the collapse of tsarism, as the leading Turanianists did not hesitate to merge their anti-Communism with anti-Russian views. Except for Ottoman Turkists, both movements favoured authoritarian political systems. The Conservative, irredentist Hungarian political framework between the two world wars provided a highly favourable atmosphere to Hungarian Turanianism, which naturally proved to be a strong supporter of the regime, with the odd exception provided by the so-called Turanian Monotheists, who were adamant extreme conservative critics of the system. Their Turkish contemporaries went even further in endorsing totalitarian political ideals. The general imperialistic character of pan-movements is evident in the case of Hungarian Turanianism, while this feature was generally directed towards the peoples that would not be included in the unity projects by the Turkish Turanianists. Nevertheless it can not be told that in the Turkish Turanianism there was no imperialistic aims towards the peoples included in the unity projects. There were also differences as to the understanding of the nature of unity to be reached among the different 'Turanian' peoples. Ottoman Turkists having entertained cultural and for a short time political unity as well, the Turanian Turkists of the Republican period were clearly dreaming about political unity. Hungarian Turanianists however, were thinking in neither linguistic nor cultural terms, their ideal being a Commonwealth-like solidarity of the 'Turanian' people. Similarly to other pan-movements, neither movement has been able to realise its vision.
