A Byzantine monastery is situated on the 520 m high northern slope of Kurşunlu Tepe, which rises 690 m on Mount Mykale (Dilek / Samsun), located 12 km south of Davutlar-Kuşadası, Aydın. Matching with the general layout of Byzantine monasteries, buildings which constitute the complex are placed around a courtyard enclosed by walls, with the church at the center. The refectory, kitchen (?), monks? cells are aligned around this courtyard and adjoins the enclosure, which took its shape from the topography of the hill. Although the southern and northern walls of the complex are ruined at some parts, most of it is still standing. While the eastern wall is observed at a certain height, no trace of the western wall can be achieved. Apart from its entrance on the west side, the church situated at the center of the complex is still standing wholly after its restoration probably in the late 19th century. On some walls of the church up to certain heights, one can observe the original structure due to the ?recessed brick? technique of Byzantine architecture. On the eastern wall of the church three apses are protruding, of which the middle has five and the smaller ones on both sides have three façades. Pastophoria, which are used for liturgical purposes are located on the northeast and southeast corners of the building. Although original layout of the church is hard to define with the existing data, thus there are three possible layouts to be discussed-basilical plan with one nave and barrel vaults, basilical plan with three naves covered with barrel vaults and extended cross-in-square plan. The entrance on the west side of the church seems to have been replanned during the 19th-century renovation due to a different use. The rectangular building on the northwestern corner of the monastic complex shall be the refectory and has two stories as understood from the traces on its walls. The building stands up to the second story and its entrance is on the southern façade. 13 or 14 structures scattered around the complex can be monks? cells, of which some adjoins the northern and southern walls of the enclosure and the rest are attached to the terrace wall of north-south axis in front of the refectory on the west of the monastery. Approximately 100 m east to the monastery, a funerary chapel is situated. Traces of arches and walls indicates a two-story building. 13th century can be suggested as the date of the Kurşunlu Monastery, in consideration with its wall technique which is similar to the church no. 4 at İkiz Ada, church no. 8 at Kahvehisar and church E at Sardes, as well as its plan similar to the Kemerli Kilise at Tirilye, Bursa.
