Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a popular modulation technique for European standards such as the Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) and the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) systems. As such it has received much attention and has been proposed for many other applications and personal communication systems. Two difficulties arise when the OFDM signal is transmitted over a dispersive channel. One difficulty is that channel dispersion destroys the orthogonality between subcarriers and causes intercarrier interference (ICI), second one is intersymbol interference (ISI) between OFDM symbols. This cyclic prefix both preserves the orthogonality of the subcarriers and prevents ISI between successive OFDM symbols. One solution for the channel estimation in OFDM is to transmit known pilot symbols on certain sub-carriers. Where the channel is not directly observable an optimum MMSE channel estimator based on pilots is proposed. From theinformation of the transmitted data on all subcarries LS estimator is obtained. LS algorithm is simpler than MMSE algorithm but it doesn?t shows as good performance as MMSE algorithm and LS algorithm has high MSE.An alternative to pilot symbol assisted channel estimation is decision-directed channel estimation. Previously detected symbols replace the pilot symbols for channel estimation. Regular transmission of pilot symbols can be avoided by techniques for blind channel estimation. Blind methods are attractive because they tend to feature better convergence properties and because no statistics need to be estimated at the receiver. Exploiting the correlations of the fading channel, previously detected symbols are used to predict the channel into the future. This technique has the advantage of allowing the tracking of fast time-varying channels without periodic transmission of training data.LMS is an adaptive algorithm, which uses a gradient-based method of steepest decent. LMS incorporates an iterative procedure that makes successive corrections to the weight vector in the direction of the negative of the gradient vector which eventually leads to the minimum mean square error. Compared to other algorithms LMS algorithm is relatively simpleIn this thesis the throughput performances of MMSE and LS algorithms in AWGN and Raiyleigh Fading channels are analyzed and compared.KEYWORDS: OFDM, channel estimation, MMSE algorithm, LS algorithm, LMS algorithm.
