Following the French revolution, the bourgeoisie imitating the aristocratic section of the society started to make competition for obtaining a `Portrait? deemed to be the symbol of the aristocracy. Upon invention of the photograph, the portrait has become the first and the widest application field of the photography. The portrait photography in the Europe and America has become an art affected by the current artistic trends of the relevant age. In the Ottoman Empire which has acquainted with photograph in 1850s, photographs were mostly used as a document. In this period, the photograph aesthetic was not considered important and the human figure was used as balancing element of the studies on nature while very important and artistic studies were being carried out regarding portrait in the western countries. When the period following the establishment of the Republic is taken into consideration, an institutional artistic concept and action have not been observed in respect of portrait photography except the individual photographers who were able to establish separate relations with the western understanding.Lütfi Özkök who had received a good education and followed the western culture thanks to his foreign languages as of his childhood has always participated in the artistic and cultural circles in Paris where he had gone after the year 1950 and in Stockholm where he is still living. During his photography career continued increasingly after 1960, the fact of his personality coming from the literature has enabled him to establish good relations with the important men of letters and to take portraits truly expressing such persons. He has taken the photographs of his models in their own environments, congresses and parks and this fact was reflected as a natural and simple atmosphere in his photographs.Frames in which the eye, face, body and model are observed on a background which is simple and which does not harass the eye in his photographs. This expression puts the model whose photograph is taken forward as a dominant character in a modest atmosphere. In general, the features are seen in detail with uni-directional lateral light and thus, the expressions are perceived clearly and dominantly. The intensive contrast in his photographs virtually reinforces the face expression of the model.Education is of course the most important element in the determination, orientation and development of the existing potentials of the individuals. Thanks to the western culture and the foreign languages he has obtained and learned since the dates of his childhood, Lütfi Özkök has acquired the artistic and cultural facts earlier than the society of Turkey. Therefore, he has acquired the opportunity of learning from lots of trends in the Europe while the photographers in Turkey were dealing with the studies of `Social? nature in 1960s. He has attended various environments where lots of disciplines varying but if we clearly determine his photographic approach, we could put him in `romantic? wing of `New Realism?.
