SUMMARY There are some eighty species of Hypericum genus, a member of Guttiferae (Hypericaceae), growing in Turkey flora. Hypericum genus which is a rich source of xanthones and flavonoids possess antidepressive, antihelmintic, antibacterial, antispazmatic, antiviral and antitumor activities. It is used in folk medicine for the treatment of infectious hepatitis, diarrhea, gastric ulser and wounds. Hypericum perforatum is now widely used in Europe as antidepresant drugs. For phytochemical investigation, the aerial parts of Hypericum hyssopifolium subsp. elongatum were dried in shadow and extracted with methanol. The methanolic extract was dissolved in water and reextracted with petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and n-butanol, respectively. Using column and thin layer chromatographic methods, 11 compounds consisting of one aliphatic ester, two phthalic acid esters, one steroid and seven flavonoids were isolated from petroleum ether and ethyl acetate extracts. The structures of ten compounds were elucidated as n-dotriacontanylhexadecanoate (HES), bis(2- methylheptyl) phthalate (HFA-1), p-sitosterol (HST), 13,118-biapigenin (volkensiflavone) (HFL-1), quercetin (HFL-2), hyperoside (HFL-3), juglanin (HFL-4), avicularin (HFL-5), astragalin (HFL-6) and quercetin 3-O-p-D- galactopyranoside-7-O-p-D-glucopyranoside (HFL-7) by means of UV, IR, MS, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, APT 13C-NMR and 2D-NMR spectroscopic methods, n- Dotriacontanylhexadecanoate (HES) and bis(2-methylheptyl) phthalate (HFA-1) are new natural compounds for the first time isolated and established by our group. On the basis of UV, IR, MS and NMR methods, HFA-2 was established as a phthalic acid ester, but the structure of it has not been yet elucidated. Further investigations on the elucidation of HFA-2 compound are currently continuing.

HFA-2' in molekül yapısının aydınlatılması üzerine çalışmalarımız devam etmektedir.
