ABSTRACT Machine Vision and Applications in Electrical Data Acquisition and Control Systems In a machine vision system, the image of a properly illuminated object is taken by a camera. These image signals, which are usually analogue, are transformed into digital series that could be processed by computers with the help of a digitizer. Those digital values in the form of a matrix are subjected to a series of mathematical and statistical processes and a result is obtained from the image. A signal generated by the computer then triggers a function that should be performed with respect to the object imaged. In this study, all those phases in the machine vision system are analyzed separately. Firstly, the reader is briefly introduced to the machine vision system and then it is analyzed as a whole system together with a short outline of its history. Part I expounds on the process in which the object, whose image will be analyzed, and its surroundings are rendered suitable for taking its images when there is no perception at all. After preparation of the appearance, the next phase is transformation of the image into digital series by means of a digitizer. This process is outlined in detail in PartV. All types of processes, which can be performed on the image described as a digital series, are defined in Part VI.
