This thesis investigated the concept of modern solidarity. It's modernized sociologically by Emile Durkheim. In this work, we looked at the change in the meaning of the concept before and after Durkheim. In order to study the concept, we have used two ideologies which are crucial for the concept of solidarity: liberalism and communitarianism. The reason for doing that that they both presume different ideas about how society is established, and the role of individual in it that make the solidarity possible. Paralleling to that, solidarity is a sign of social order, cohesion, so, that is why one thinks of these ideologies are interrelated with the concept of solidarity. It's clear that the borders with modernity have been expanded, and this effected daily human affairs directly including the meaning and dimension of solidarity among people. People living in the ancient regime have experienced that the limits of their daily life changed through industrialization and constitutionalism which coexist with the other factors like the rules of new economic system, laws, policies. As the borders expand, the economy and politics have been modernized accordingly. In this age of transformation, individual and the nation states which have legitimacy based on the constitution and national assemblies will bring about a public space which has its own habits and rules. This new public space will define the relations between individuals and state whose peculiar characteristics are more discrete and more complicated. Meanwhile, this structural transformation, according to Durkheim, turns mechanic solidarity based on similarities in traditional society into organic solidarity based on the differences brought about by individual and their functions in modern world. Modern nation states and societies, especially after French revolution, processed and operated the concept with respect to their social policies. The six European states constituted an economic organization in 1958 with the Rome Treaty. Then this supranational community converted to a political union in 1993 by the Maastricht Treaty. This political union called EU (European Union) has 28 members as to the end of 2013. And this fact tells that clearly and distinctly the borders mentioned above have been expanded economically and politically once again. The reflections of this growth have been felt severely by Europe especially via globalization. What does this change mean for the concept of solidarity? This thesis on the one hand aimed to inquiry the concept's development historically, on the other hand, the present and possible meanings and references made for it at the European level.
