Şehbenderzâde Filibeli Ahmet Hilmi (1865-1914) is known to have been among the most prominent intellectuals of the Second Constitutional Era. He authored more than forty books and hundreds of articles in the period his death. Research about the author has generally centred on fields such as religion, philosophy and history. In addition to being an intellectual, having written Öksüz Turgut and A?mâk-ı Hayâl, Ahmet Hilmi is a fiction writer.A?mâk-ı Hayâl is among the literary works of the National Literature Era, however it differs from the works of the period in terms of its subject matter and the techniques it employs. The narrative, which is similar to classical and traditional genres, also displays qualities of a novel through its attempt of demonstrating the individual?s psychology. Thus arises the problem of determining the literary genre of works similar to A?mâk-ı Hayâl. The purpose of this thesis is to determine the literary genre of A?mâk-ı Hayâl which has not been studied thoroughly before and discuss whether it can be considered a modernist novel. In this thesis, first, the ideas of Aristoteles, Georg Lukacs, Mikhail Bakhtin, Franco Moretti and Jacques Derrida on literary genres and novel have been discussed. When analysing the text generically, it has been observed that A?mâk-ı Hayâl embodies the qualities of the genres mesnevi, menakıpname and folk tale. Therefore in the first part of the thesis, the similarities and differences between A?mâk-ı Hayâl and the classical and traditional genres have been examined. The facts that many chapters in the book are told by first person narration, the inclination of the author to discover human spirit, and the self-realization of the individual through dreams show that A?mâk-ı Hayâl embodies the qualities of a modernist novel. Consequently in the second part, a comparison is drawn between A?mâk-ı Hayâl and the modernist novel. In the third part of the thesis, nine dreams that are told in the book are analysed within the context of mystic symbols and Archetypical Criticism in order to unearth how intellect and modernism is related in the narrative, which contains supernatural aspects, yet still cannot be classified exactly under any classical or traditional genre. As a result, it has been concluded that A?mâk-ı Hayâl is a narrative that has the qualities of both a realist and a modernist novel, hence a transitional work. Furthermore, it has been proved that through A?mâk-ı Hayâl, the first modernist step in Turkish literature was taken before the Republican Era.

Tür tespiti yapılırken A'mâk-ı Hayâl'in mesnevi, menakıpname, halk hikâyesi gibi türlerin özelliklerini barındırdığı görülmüştür. Bu nedenle tezin birinci kısmında geleneksel ve klasik türlerle A'mâk-ı Hayâl arasındaki benzerlikler ve farklar üzerinde durulmuştur.A'mâk-ı Hayal'in pek çok bölümünün kahraman anlatıcı tarafından anlatılması, yazarın insan ruhuna yönelen tavrı, rüyalar yoluyla bireyin kendini gerçekleştirmesi, eserde modernist romana dair bazı özelliklerin bulunduğunu göstermektedir. Bu nedenle tezin ikinci bölümünde A'mâk-ı Hayâl ve modernist roman arasındaki ilişki sorgulanmıştır.Olağanüstü ögelere yer veren ancak geleneksel ve klasik türlere de dâhil edilemeyen anlatıda, akıl ve modernizm arasındaki ilişkiyi kavramak amacıyla tezin üçüncü bölümünde, anlatıda yer alan dokuz rüya, tasavvuf sembolleri ve Arketipçi Eleştiri bağlamında incelenmiştir.Bu incelemelerin sonucunda A'mâk-ı Hayâl'in klasik gerçekçi roman ile modernist roman arasında bir geçiş eseri olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmış, Türk edebiyatında ilk modernist kırılmanın Cumhuriyet döneminden daha önce A'mâk-ı Hayâl ile ortaya çıktığı kanıtlanmıştır.
