In this thesis, ambivalence as a constituent of modernity is discussed in terms of filmic space and urban space. Taking two conflicting approaches towards urban environment as an initial point in interpreting spatial formation, the background of those approaches is outlined in terms of the occasions that paved the way. From this point of view, the means of space as an acting component instead of a passive back drop were sought for. Accordingly, urban space and the idea of the citizen presented in A ay (Reha Erdem, 1988) and Karanlık Sular (Kutluğ Ataman, 1989) are analyzed and their characteristics are eloborated. In both films, ambivalence takes role in reconstructing the image of urban space as well as problematizing the relationships between dwelling and belonging, the house and the city within the context of modernity. The spaces of house and city are explored through the figures and concepts of the ruin, the stranger, the fantastic, the uncanny and other spaces (heterotopias) together with the themes of cultural and historical heritage, nostalgia, the relativity of and the distinction between the interior and exterior spaces and the problematization of the distinction of natural and urban spaces that appeared through modernity. Thus, the possibilities of a cinema which does not reduce space to a reflection of what can be seen through the eyes and instead takes on social space and the production of space as tendency are explored so that those possibilities that stimulate new relations of space-time and subject-space are laid out in terms of the themes and figures of modernism.
