In Turkey, classification which is the last step of the natural stone production process is carried out by selection workers. One of the most important stages of the production process is made by different visual evaluations by different selection workers. In that case, it is impossible to indicate this process as an objective classification. Natural stone manufacturers' exports major part of the productions to the other countries. The occurring of classification errors at exported products is decreased the quantity order and value of products. Insomuch that product returns from the costumer, loss of customers or prestige can be done. In this thesis, the design of an automation system with image processing algorithms for the classification of natural stone instead of selection workers is developed. In the designed system an industrial camera, LED lighting, conveyor belt, industrial computers, control panel, cooling unit is used. Software is developed in MATLAB environment for automatic operation of the system. In this thesis total 176 colors in the color space YCbCr, OH, HSV, Y (NTSC), YUV, HSI, HSL, XYZ, DAC, XYZ (D65), LAB, CMY, double (RGB), LUV, CAT02LMS, RGB, and owing to the co-occurrence matrix of the same color space contrast, homogeneity, energy and entropy texture features are generated. All of these features are not distinguishing. Even though, some of them decrease the classification performance. Fisher criterion, Pearson Coefficients and Adaptive Neural Fuzzy Classifier with Linguistic Hedges are used to determine the distinctive features. The selected features are classified by Bayes and Adaptive Neural Fuzzy Classifier. Adaptive Neural Fuzzy Classifier gives the best result in both feature selection and classification in result of the test outcome. In the result of the experiments, success rate of 94% is achieved within the averagely classification time of 3 seconds, for the size of 45x45cm2, and five different classes of total 100 travertine stone plates which are found in the local area of the Burdur Bucak. The system is capable of working in real time applications in the industry with the obtained results.
