Özet

The present study aims to analyze the radicalization among some relatively junior officers of the Turkish military through the mid-fifties. In the study, it will be argued that it was this radicalization which had led the conspirators to the 1960 coup. The analysis will be carried out through the pattern of `radical reform? coup developed by Samuel P. Huntington in 1962. By doing so, the study will assume that the 1960 coup was a `radical reform? coup with respect to both the reasons of the coup and the changes it intended to bring about in political, institutional, and socio-economic structure of the country. The study also asks `what was the basis for this radical reformism which led to the military coup d?état in May 1960?? The study will seek an answer to this question by examining the extent to which the DP administration lived up to expectations of the military establishment as a whole after it came to power. To this end, it will also try to examine the changes that took place in the traditional elite composition in the 1950s and the social composition of the coup-makers at the time of the 1960 coup.
