May 14, 1950 elections are an important turning point in Turkish democracy history. Republican People?s Party (CHP) that has 27-years continuous government history left his place to Democratic Party after this election and defected to the opposition. This change occurred with actions and consent of CHP itself. First four years of Democratic Party has been explicated within the frame of opposition of Republican People?s Party in this study. The main source of the thesis is Turkish press that gives detailed information relating to party relations providing daily material. The fact that CHP came to a position criticizing its own situation is also valuable as self-criticism. The thesis has a critical approach towards Democratic Party in terms of discussing opposition of CHP. However, criticisms are not simplex. Hearty admissions and defenses of CHP members involved in the discussions of the period add a different liveliness to the thesis. The study has revealed a table displaying system criticisms of system officers.Opposition of Democratic Party before 1950, received support of the press due to deficient approach of the government against democracy and escalated. However, the attitude of DP against anti-democratic practices when it was in opposition changed when it became the government. Characteristic feature of the governments has been to slow down democratic development considering the system (in fact its own future) in danger and characteristic future of the opposition has been to defend democracy. The purpose of my study is to examine relations in first government period of DP and first opposition period of CHP from opposition perspective. Discussing 1950-54 Turkish press from main opposition axis has created an opportunity of comparative approach towards democracy understanding. With transition to multi-party period, position of the unique party that is identical with the state, CHP became a controversial subject. Psychology of CHP in direction of own age of ideology traversed government position of DP, and prevented it from getting out of ?opposition obsession?. There is questioning of the past in defenses of DP members. One-party period was not left in the past in its special conditions; it was drifted into whirl of politics.I submit my thanks to my adviser professor Associate Professor Dr. Cezmi Eraslan who provided basis and contribution for the thesis with the education and support he gave, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Saray that did not withhold his experiences, Associate Professor Ali Arslan and Associate Professor Mustafa Budak who had an important role in my education.KEY WORDS:Republican People?s Party (Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi)Democratic Party1950-1954 YearsDemocracyTransition to multi-party life.
