It is speculated that myocard suffer from anaerobiosis before skeletal muscles during a standard graded exercise tests (GXT), and therefore, VO2 gives a peak before reach the real VO2max. This knowledge reminds that standard laboratory applications should be re-examined. The purpose of this study was to examine test modality, test duration, initial loading, verification phase, V ̇O2 kinetics and plateau (<150 mL∙min-1 differences in VO2). Eight moderately trained athletes (22.13±2.6 years; 179±6.5 cm height; 72.66±10 kg body mass; 58.2±7 mL∙kg-1∙min-1 V ̇O2maks) were volunteered in this study. GXT4, GXT6, GXT10 and GXT16 were performed by focusing on exhaustion in four, six, ten and sixteen minutes by using a standard cycle ergometer and a whole-body activated elliptical trainer. Following a one hour recovery period, constant-loading verification phases (VP4, VP6, VP10 and VP16) were performed by using the last stage loads of GXTs. According to results, all GXTs obtained from elliptical trainer (55.7±7; 58.1±7; 56±6 and 54.4±6.4 mL∙kg-1∙min-1) were statistically greater than the cycle tests (53.6±7.3; 56.1±6.7; 52.9±7.6 and 51.6±5.6 mL∙kg-1∙dk-1) (p≤0.05). GXT6 results obtained from both ergometers were greater than the other test durations (p≤0.05). VPs could not be verified GXTs (p>0.05), except GXT6s (p≤0.05). 97% of VPs belonging to all exhaustion durations showed a plateau, while those rates were smaller in GXTs (p≤0.05). In conclusion, it is showed that optimum duration to exhaustion is six minutes, and VPs' should use for showing acceptability of V ̇O2max tests. Moreover, it was shown that plateau in VO2 was not able to be used as primary test termination criteria for the GXT or VP only for verifying the tests' acceptability and elliptical trainers are more affected when compare to cycle ergometers, to reveal VO2max.
