Özet

Internal security services in Ottoman were considered in the military structure and it was done according to this. With the separation of internal and external security notions in 19th century, the duty of public order in cities was assigned to police department. In this period having the most difficult years of the empire, the foundations of the organization which will continue until today were established. The existence of police in Thessaloniki could date back to 1876. Although the number of the policemen was inadequate, the organization of them around the province was considered as crucial. In addition, the organization used technological developments of that period in their services by following them despite limited budget opportunities. Despite the various problems that Thessaloniki Police Department had experienced since the foundation of the organization, it took its place in the empire hierarchy by forming its organizational structure in a short time. What is more, it provided the public order in around the province with the works carried out in order to prevent or enlighten crimes.
