Bipolar system ceased its existence after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and socialist regime. Breakdown of the Union affected the former Soviet republics dramatically. After the independence, former Soviet Republics started their national state-building processes mostly relied on ethnic distinctions. Such a political discourse caused uneasy feeling among the population who were not coming from the same ethnicity. Thus, it triggered the migration process to other countries which were considered as their ethnic homeland. Many crises in the post-Soviet geography, such as unsolved border issues, ethnic conflicts, power struggles gave rise to civil war and the further worsening of the ethnopolitical situation within the whole region. Consequently, ethnic-based and irregular migrations have become widespread in former Soviet space. Deterioration of living standards, unemployment, poverty and overall economic decline within the region accelerated labor and socio-economically motivated migration processes as well. Migration, except for forced and government-controlled migrations, was not an ordinary process in the USSR. Dimensions and purposes of migration in Central Asia changed drastically after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Hence, internal migration processes within the Soviet Union turned into the international process after its dissolution. Various types of migration processes have emerged in conjunction with the changed circumstances and new international climate. These types can be characterized as voluntary, ethnic-based, social and economically motivated, and security-related migration processes. The main focus of the present thesis is migration processes in Central Asia. The time sequence starts from 1991 up to present days. Migration courses, population settlement strategies and deportation policies of the USSR were investigated as an underlying historical background of the research. The thesis also inquires into different ethnic structures of the Central Asian states and arising demographic processes within the region. Further, it explores problems of migration that states are facing at present and evaluates various factors influencing migration processes in Central Asia. Key Words: Central Asia, USSR, Migration, Population, Demographic Processes, Ethnic Identity.
