The aim of this study is to analyze how culture is represented through subtitling in the less widely investigated language pair of Turkish as the source and English as the target language. Previous studies have mainly focused on how English language films are translated into minor languages; however, this study analyzes English subtitles of a Turkish film called Butterfly's Dream. The premise that culture is preserved when the direction of the translation is from major to minor has been perceived from the opposite direction; therefore, how culture is transferred in Turkish to English translation of cultural references and poetry was investigated. Analysis of cultural references has been one of the main issues in Translation Studies so far. This study offers another dimension of culture to be included in the subtitling analysis; poetry, which is the main theme of the film. As this study adopts a descriptive approach, Polysytem Theory by Even Zohar (1990) and Translation norms by Toury (1995) formed the theoretical framework of the study. Based on case study research design, this study adopted quantitative and qualitative data analyses. Quantitative data is obtained though the analysis of cultural references with Diaz Cintas and Remael's subtitling strategies (2007) and the analysis of poetry with Lefevere's (1975) poetry translation strategies and then frequencies of the applied strategies were calculated. As this study offers a contextual analysis by covering textual and extratextual parameters, cinematographic language offered by Chaume (2004) was also investigated as all these components are effective in creating the meaning in audiovisual products. Qualitative data was obtained through the interview conducted with film department of the production company. Results showed that cultural references were domesticated while poetry was foreignized. It was seen that tendency of the film and decisions made by the subtitler were also affected by the other agents in the process. Cinematographic language was also found to have an influence on the subtitler's choices.

Nicel veri kültürel öğelerin Diaz Cintas and Remael'in altyazı çevirisi stratejileri (2007), şiirlerin ise Lefevere'in şiir çevirisi stratejileri (1975) ile incelenmesi ve uygulanan stratejilerin sıklığının hesaplanmasıyla elde edilmiştir.
