The period of modernizing in the 19th century, which is also named ?the westernization period?, caused important changes in the system of travelling and accommodation in the Ottoman period and this change also affected unavoidably the forming of accommodation constructions. In this search, we have tried to evaluate the hotel constructions in terms of architectural and historical aspects by noting the hotel constructions belonging to the time between 1840, which is accepted as the beginning of Istanbul?s hotel history, and 1914 when the World War 1 started, many hotel construction ceased and caused many hotels to close down and to determine the problems of protecting the constructions which are still present. At first, the history of travelling and accommodation of the city was surveyed according to the era cycle system since the city was founded in order to know the hotel constructions that developed between 1840 and 1914. It has been seen that the accommodation constructions showed variety and improvement in the city which was ridden visitors every period for many reasons such as trading, immigration, war, diplomacy, religion, health, education and tourism depending upon the states which remained within the borders and the interaction with other countries. As the travel and tourism sector became important depending on the developments on the transportation systems in the 19th century, the European accommodation system which started as transforming the houses into pensions at the beginning, developed in the way of building quite luxurious and comfortable hotel constructions according to the last technology later. The hotel management sector which began in Galata in 1840 spread fast throughout the city and developed. The constructions which were built as city hotel qua in Beyoğlu and Sirkeci at first were added the country hotels by the side of the Bosphorus and in Adalar. However, in this survey, the hotels in Istanbul were handled in two parts, one ?the hotels outside Galata and Pera? and the other ?Galata and Pera Hotels? because most of the information was found in Galata- Pera region. In this way, detailed information has been able to be given on the 150 hotels that served between 1840 and 1914 concerning with the location, history, architecture and the protected situation of them. Under the lights of the documents which were reached at the official achieves and various sources and dated the beginning of the 19th and 20th century, the hotel constructions have been tried to be examined in terms of their location, designing principles, material and construction techniques. And the hotels whose location could not be determined precisely but were understood the presence of them in other sources, have been given in lists at the end of the parts which were divided according to sections in Istanbul. As Galata and Pera are the regions where the first hotels were opened in Istanbul, the most qualified hotels samples were built and the most hotels in comparison with others are protected today, they were chosen as survey area under the protection. As the social, cultural, historical etc developments in both regions are connected with each other firmly, they have been examined together. At first, the decisions of the City master Plan with 1/5000 scale which were made by the Greater Municipality of Istanbul for protection aims were evaluated and then the determining of the hotel constructions which have reached completely or in partial until today, their deterioration reasons and deterioration situations were stated. Under the lights of the evidences which were obtained, the protection problems of the hotel constructions which have reached us completely or in part were determined at the end of the result section of this survey and the approaches on solving these problems were tried to be determined.
