Abstract The aim of this thesis is to determine the original position of Yön-Devrim Movement in the traditional Turkish intellectual and left movement. Yön-Devrim Movement, a continuation of the traditional Turkish-Ottoman intellectual movements with some of it concepts and thinking way, was, at the same time, one of the most important socialist trends of sixties in Turkey. The original position of this movement was determined by the factors, differing it from the other traditional intellectual movements and TIP (The Turkish Labour Party). One of its main thesis was that: the problems of society could only be diagnosed by the progressive intellectuals and be cured with the radical methods of them from upward to downward. The leaders of Yön Movement criticised the thesis of TIP leaders that socialism would be constructed by the socialist organisations of workers as a socialist movement. They maintained that the historical role of the worker class could only be played after the victory of the progressive intellectuals on the reactionary forces. The leaders of Yön Movement also criticised the traditional intellectual movements of the past on that point: the thoughts of the leaders of these movements, which had shaped the history of the country, were not sufficiently comprehensive ones. According to the theorists of Yön Movement, the development of the country could only be materialised with the transformation of the economic and social structures, not enlightening the ignorant people or transplanting some institutes and the laws of the West into the social structure. The theorists of Yön Movement also reinterpreted the concepts of nationalism, statism, populism and revolutionism in the light of Marxism. These concepts had been introduced to the political life of the country by `Yeni Osmanlılar` (New Ottomanists), developed by Jeune Turcs and articulated in a programatic way by Kemalists, in the past. They maintained that their socialistic development strategy would be materialised by the intellectuals (civilian or uniformed), armed with their radical thoughts. Yön Movement worked like a party without a regulation. It was one of the most important intellectual movements of Turkey and constituted a threshold between Marxism and Turkish intellectuals in sixties. IV.
