This study aims to explore the historical position of teachers in the process of social change in Cuba. For that purpose, it attempts to give an account of the position of teachers in the political discourse and how the teacher training system changed throughout the history. The reason for the selection of Cuba as a research object is that it is an alternative example that does not fit to the globally hegemonic teacher-training model that is determined by neoliberal policies. In this study, the data collected by literature review are analyzed by methods of discourse analysis and descriptive analysis. In order to understand the position of teachers in the political discourse, first, the post-revolutionary era is divided into four periods: `proliferation of the revolution and education (1959-1970)`, `socialist institutionalization and perfeccionamiento (1970-1986)`, `rectification (correction) and special period (1986-2000)`, `the battle of ideas (2000-today)`. For each period, speeches of the political founders of the revolution were analyzed by discourse analysis. The analysis of transformation of the teacher-training system, in turn, covers the pre-revolutionary period (colonial and neocolonial period, from the 16th century to 1959) beside the abovementioned four periods. Each period is studied by a descriptive analysis of documents, practices and curricula relating to teacher training. In consideration of both political discourse and systems of teacher training, the analyses lead to the conclusion that teachers were considered as defenders and vectors of the revolution during the first period of the post-revolutionary era. In the second period, teaching became a profession with a mission to lead the society in line with the goals of development. In the third period, the identity of the teacher became more relevant with patriotism and research. Today, in turn, the teacher is expected to be a producer and vector of universal ideas such as egalitarianism, freedom, social justice, and solidarity. Besides, in the current teacher training system, the teacher is expected to be a professional that is an expert in his/her field, a researcher that seeks scientific solutions to educational problems and participates in the policy making process, and a leader that is integrated with the community, whose field of activity is not restricted to the school. Key words: Neoliberalism, Cuba, teacher model, teacher training.
