Beginning from the first years of the Republic, Adana had been one of the important agricultural and commercial centres of its region and of Turkey. It was one of the oldest and most important settlements of Anatolia due to its geographical position, climate and water resources. Because of these characteristics, Adana was regionally the first and nationally the fifth most crowded province demographically. It grew rapidly and became one of the first provinces that became familiar with shanties. With 13 districts, 29 sub-districts and 739 villages, Adana ranked the first in the Mediterranean Region and the fifth in Turkey with these numbers. In addition to land routes, direct access to Ankara and Istanbul through the Konya-Pozantı-Adana railway and to the Port of Mersin through the Mersin railway became possible. Thus, agricultural production, commerce and exports primarily including cotton began to rise rapidly.Adana was one of the leading provinces of Turkey in the production of cotton, in particular, wheat, barley, oat, corn, rice, chickpea, bean, and citrus fruits. Due to Marshall aid and opportunities of importation, agricultural means and use of fertilisers became widespread in the province. The introduction of modern agricultural vehicles primarily including tractors to the region both raised production and also made it possible to open new lands for agriculture. With the Seyhan Dam, the construction of which was completed in 1956, irrigation opportunities increased, and high levels of production and efficiency were achieved. The rapid increase of income in agriculture provided the finances needed for other sectors, and enabled to establish new industrial facilities. While job opportunities resulted in a rapid reception of migration, this situation also brought many problems. Since the migration triggered squatting, new zoning arrangements became necessary. Perhaps, the only positive aspect of the change that occurred in the social structure was the emergence of cultural diversity.Significant advances were made in the fields of health and education. Qualitative and quantitative improvements were achieved in terms of physicians, nurses, midwives and other health staff and organisations. Through mobile treatment services, significant accomplishments were made against contagious diseases like tuberculosis, malaria and cholera. However, these services were not sufficient in the face of a growing population.Adana was leading among the cities that showed improvement in the field of education. Private elementary schools and colleges offered service in Adana during the years when state schools were being newly introduced to many provinces of Turkey. Furthermore, the province had secondary schools, high schools and vocational high schools that were older than the Republic. Between the years of 1960 and 1980, many new and modern schools were introduced in consideration of the developments in the fields of agriculture, industry and trade. In the period covered by the present study, Adana had a distinguished position in cultural terms. While other provinces possessed one or two museums, libraries and a limited number of cinemas and newspapers, Adana was at a very advance point. It possessed 9 public libraries and 5 private libraries. Additionally, 5 museums and 37 cinemas were offering service. As a province with a lively political life, elections in Adana showed periodic differences. As the AP (the Justice Party) was booming in Turkey between the years of 1960 and 1970, the voters of Adana were not indifferent to this. When memoranda and financial problems arose, however, the political preferences of the people of Adana showed variability accordingly. The interest after 1970 focused more on the CHP with Ecevit, the MHP and the MSP. It should to be mentioned that the interest in these parties was not as continuous and climbing as the support given to the AP in the 1960s.
