This study focusing on bull wrestling festivals taking place in Artvin, a city on the eastern coast of Blacksea in Turkey is based on a four months of ethnographic field research. The main purpose of this thesis is to attempt to invalidate the attribution of tradition to Kafkasör Festival through its link with peace wrestlings which are thought to have originated from cattle breeding practices taking place in the mountainous Artvin highlands in order to protect the bulls from injuring each other while selecting the herd leader among themselves during transhumance movement. It is argued that while the discourse of peace wrestling is mainly defined by an act of reconciliation between animals within the herd necessary for the transhumance cycle to take place without loss of livestock; the bull wrestling on the other hand have lost its origin and added new layers and meanings to it within the historical process it has undergone. The second purpose of this study will be to highlight the styles of masculinities which are approved by the discourse of manful applause during the festival. It is argued that the hegemonic masculinities staged in the arena act as a cover to downsize the neoliberal aspects of the spectacle. In this context, the money given to the bull owner as a prize is opened up for discussion as it demonstrates the financial side of an otherwise manly performance. The arguments of the thesis will be developed and discussed based on three different aspects of the organization such as organizers, bull owners, and spectators which are thought to constitute and continue the same discourses. The place where this discourses have been encountered, negotiated and staged is the arena itself. The mise-en-scene set up in the arena has been interpreted in ways similar to a staged spectacle where the audience constitute the existence of bull wrestling as a practice, make the spectacle worth watching and negotiate the meanings attached to it.
