Biorenewable fuels are safely and easily biodegradable and so are particularly well suited to the environment. Properties of ethanol generally appear more favorable than those of methanol since its calorific value is higher and its latent heat is lower than methanol.Utilization of ethyl alcohol as engine fuel is one way to reduce both the consumption of crude oil and environmental pollution. Ethanol has a higher octane number, broader flammability limits, higher flame speeds, and higher heats of vaporization than gasoline.Gasoline blended with ethanol (fuel ethanol) is becoming increasing popular as an alternative fuel for motor vehicles. Currently there are two type blends of ethanol-gasoline on the market: blends of 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline (E10) and blends of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline (E85).In this study, the effects of unleaded gasoline, ethanol-gasoline (E5, E10, E30 ve E85) blends on combustion characteristic and exhaust emissions were investigated experimentally. In the experiments, a vehicle which has a four-cylinder and four-stroke spark ignition engine was used. The results obtained from E5, E10, E30 and E85 were compared with the reference unleaded gasoline fuel.According to the results obtained;1.The results of the engine test showed that ethanol addition to unleaded gasoline increase the engine torque, power and fuel consumption; reduce CO, CO2, HC and NOx emissions.2.The ignition timing has a significant effect on the performance of spark ignition engines. It can be said that using ethanol at advancing the ignition timing (up to (+4) CA) in the engines significantly improves the engine performance and decreases the exhaust emissions. Keywords: Spark ignition engines, ethanol, performance, emission, ignition timing.
