In the first part of thesis, the introduction is discussed. The notion of sustainability and sustainable architecture which are discussed in the second chapter, have been known as solutions to the environmental problems arising from various activities in the world since the past and have been developed by countries and states without losing its originality in the historical process. The main purpose of these concepts is using the valuable resources which are available in the world, saving energy, paying attention to the use of materials and extending the life of the buildings which are built with these criteria and leave it as a legacy to the future generations is very important. The most general definition of this concept is the capacity to sustain a situation or process within any period of time. At the same time, it invites people to universal thinking and solidarity rather than individual thinking and discusses environmental, social and economic dimensions as a result. As the main subject of thesis is related to the Iranian region, four different climatic regions of Iran have been examined in the third chapter. As a result of these investigations, it is known that climate plays an important role in the formation of Iran's traditional houses. These regions are considered as hot- dry, humid, cold and hot- humid climate and general characteristics of each region are mentioned in this section. The characteristics of the courtyard, which is known as a climate element in the traditional houses of Iran, are discussed in the fourth chapter which is the heart of thesis. The courtyard is known as the main center of traditional houses and thenumber of courtyards depends on the type of house. The courtyards can provide security, privacy and comfort in houses. These houses are built for the religious values that are widespread in Iranian culture, take the element of privacy and all the architectural elements and spaces like; open, semi- open and closed spaces aroundthe courtyard, in addition to mentioned element, due to the forms of them and the direction of proportions and dimensions, it is built suitable to the climate zone. In addition, to the type of traditional houses for each climate zone that presented in the study, it is given detailed information about the working system of wind catchers which are common in the houses of this region, mainly because of the examination of the houses in hot- dry climate region. Therefore, the techniques which are discussed have provided comfortable life for people against difficult climatic conditions. In the fifth part of thesis the concept of sustainability and the elationship between the courtyard is discussed. In this section, the spaces in the courtyard and appliedarchitectural techniques are stated in the scope of sustainability concept. For example; factors such as type of material using, solar and wind energy using, natural cooling and cross ventilation, attention to energy efficiency, energy relation with the courtyard, pool, water and plants having an important role in micro- climateregulation of these areas are included in the same framework as those covered by the concept of sustainability. So, Iranian traditional houses are defined as sustainable houses. Keywords: Sustainability, Traditional House, Iran, Courtyard, Energy Use.
