Gender is a concept that describes gender roles created, taught, and/ or learned for those genders, as well as behaviors expected from those gender roles, by demonstrating biological sex. . Markers articulated on biological sex position the female and male genders against each other. According to Jean Genet, the French playwright who placed the sexual hierarchy at the center of power; power is etched into the selves of individuals with its entrenched string of rules and entrenched forms of behavior. Within this hierarchy, powerful men take part in the top tier. Women, children and homosexuals are in the lowest tier. In Genet's plays, women, prostitutes, thieves, homosexuals are governed by brute force, violence, and always humiliation by men. Like other gender identities, masculinity is a fiction of social processes. According to Michel Foucault's theory of power, the most obvious management tool in modern society is the principle of surveillance and record keeping. To make individuals fully visible under a central view is to ensure the functioning of the mechanism of domination. In Modern societies, it is necessary for disciplinarian power to put increasing pressure on the psychology of the individual, and to make this pressure part of the 'reform' design, according to Micheal Faucault. The institutions and discourses of the age in which the individual is present are the mechanisms that produce the discourse of power, which operate in a coordinated and hierarchical order. The individual is never independent of the society in which he lives and the values of society. The individual is the bearer and target of identities, on which structures and discourses are built. This work will focus on the construction of gender, gender roles, gender hierarchy, and the relationship of gender with power in Jean Genet's The Balcony and the Deathwatch plays, in light of theories of gender, body, and power. In The Study, A. J. Greimas's method of semiotics has been designated as the method of analyzing the plays discussed.

Çalışmada, A. J. Greimas'ın göstergebilim yöntemi, ele alınan oyunları çözümleme yöntemi olarak belirlenmiştir.
