This study deals with the ceramic finds discovered during Patara excavations for the last 23 years, which cannot be related to any known pottery centers or workshops samples and considered as probable locally produced wares. The Lycian city of Patara and its harbour lies on the eastern side of the small bay of the Xanthos river which is now known as Çayağzı. The harbour was very important and convenient access to the sea for the inhabitants of Xanthos valley and therefore very important commercial center for the region. Patara excavations reveals many imported wares related to different pottery centers but among them some cannot be releted to any known group or pottery center. Studying on these different group of wares, researchers investigate the possibility of some of the samples being local products. The so called group includes samples of Chios Amphora, lykion, lamps, unguentarium, pot stand, terra sigillata and red glazed Roman wares. These group of ceramics were unearthed on Patara Main Street, Hurmalık Bath, Tepecik Necropolis and Tepecik Palace excavations. The most important data revealing the ceramic production in Patara were finds of ceramic workshops and pottery kiln comlexes. Within the perimeter of the southern wall of the Harbour Bath House tepidarium area and on the northwest to southeast direction on Tepecik hill, there were ceramic workshops which were most probably used during 6th and 5th century B.C. On the Tepecik Necropolis there was one stone built kiln and on the northeast of the city in beetwen Günlük Rock Tombs and Kaynak Temple there were five pottery kilns discovered. On one hand, the existance of ceramic production in Patara was revealed by the finds of Hellenistic Era Molds of Megarian Bowls collected on Tepecik Hill surface, on the other hand continuation of ceramic production was revealed by the surplus kiln remains and flawed production remains coming from Tepecik Palace dating back to 1st and 2nd century A.D.The studies will be conducted in two phases and material was chosen among the ceramics which was tought to be ?local production? samples. Most of the finds which were not revealing the full shapes were studied along with the similar samples from other excavations and the shapes were defined and measured accordingly. In the first phase continuation of Patara ceramic production will be investigated and ?local production? samples will be compared with the clay samples collected around the Patara region using the petrographic and chemical analysis methods. It is believed that the results will shed light on the ceramic production in Patara on Hellenistic, Early Roman and even on earlier periods in history. In the second phase of the Project, the samples will be reproduced again using the local area clay and production techniques within the framework of the knowledge acquired during the first phase. It is believed that this process will help to increase knowledge on experimental archeology. Among the other benefits, this study, using forms from different ceramic groups and local area clay samples, will also help to display some ceramic forms in its near original shapes ,which were never found before as a full sample.
