Detection of the genetic height potential (GHP) is very important in the evaluation of short stature particularly familial short stature which constitutes a major part of etiology. 'Midparental height' that is used to evaluate the short stature, represents the child's expected height according to his/her parents. In our country, any studies related to midparental height have not been reported. The two main aims of this study are to validate the classical midparental height calculations for our populations and to explore the optimal midparental height model in our country by measuring parental height in a large cohort. In order to achieve this goal, the anthropometric measurements of medical students who have already reached to their adult height and their parents were taken. While 308 measurements in this study were carried out by educated and experienced study crew, 694 of that were collected from the people were involved in the study after getting their and their parents the height measured in a health center or a pharmacy according to given instructions. Since there wasn't any significant statistical difference between the data from measured and collected groups, statistical analysis were done by combining all data. The average heights were 164.46±6.2 cm (range 146-191 cm) and MPH's were 160,6±5,5 cm in girls and 177.1±6.8 (range 142-197 cm) and MPH's were 174,4±5,5 cm in boys. It has been noted that girls were 3.1 cm taller than their mothers and and 3,8 cm taller than their mothers MPH. Boys were 3.4 cm taller than their fathers and 2,7 cm taller than their fathers MPH. It can be explained by either the height is increasing in the new generation (the century's trend continues) or the parents' height is decreasing by the effect of age. In our study, the height difference between girls and boys were 12.8 cm whereas it was 12.0 cm between mother and father. These numbers are close to the one used in classical midparental height calculations. The real height was 3.8±5.7 cm more in boys and 2.69±6.4 more in girls when compared to the midparental height. These results showed that the midparental height calculations were inaccurate to estimate the children's real height. The girls showed better correlation than boys (r: 0.537 and 0.487) regarding the correlations between midparental height and heights of child, mother, father. The girls' height showed stronger correlation with mother's height, but boys showed the correlation in equal strength with their mother and father. While the height of short stature girls showed stronger correlation with mother's height, height of long stature boys showed stronger correlation with father's height.Based on data of our population, some experimental models were tested to find the best model to estimate the real height using the parents' height. The model with the formula below was identified as the best model to make the closest estimations.Model 4Height SDS: A x Mother' SDS + B x Father SDS + CA: Mother's coefficient (0.364 in this model)B: Father's coefficient (0.247 in this model)C: Intercept (0.421 in this model).

Çalışma popülasyonumuzun verilerine dayanarak anne-baba boyundan çocuğun final boyunu tahmin edebilecek matematiksel modellere bakıldığında aşağıdaki formülün en yakın tahminleri yapmamızı sağladığı görüldü.MODEL 4Boy SDS: A x Anne SDS + B x baba SDS+ CA: Annenin katsayısı (Bu modelde: 0.364)B: Babanın katsayısı (Bu modelde: 0.247) C: Intercept (Bu modelde 0.421).
