Thousand years of human heritage is an important determinant while building today and editing our tomorrow. When the effects and traces of social memory, that we mostly are not aware of consciously in the social structure and daily experiences, combine with hegemonic powers of the system then they stand as a threat and danger for the individual?s freedom search, his becoming conscious and the socialization. The values and the judgements that constitute our memeory, have been reproduced again and again for centuries, and that confront us as prejudice and stereotypes especially within our relationship with `the other? in social life, effect and define our lives, experiences, our relationships and our imagination regarding future. Science, philosophy and art are the fields that we try to overcome this dominating determination of the ruling system. They are the fields that enable the production of counter-hegemonic expressions, oppositional discourses and activities. In this context especially from the mid-century of 20. cc the documentary films seem to be a research area for the oppositional counter-discourses. With their search outside of ordinary stories of the memorized major history the documentary film is a mass communication tool which tries to show that history and today can be read and edited differently. The primary function of documentaries is ?to re-read, remind and to record? the realities that are appeased, forgotten and erased from memory. The documentaries that were shot in recent years try to submit another history to us by reading the social issues that have place in our social memory in a different way. As the number of documentary films produced has increased considerably, especially nowadays it?s necessary to reconsider the functionality of the documentary films in relation with history, society and memory. It?s obvious that while discussing documentary films, we need to include changing social conditions, the perception of system, individual etc to the discussion. Key words: social memory, represantation, documentary film.
