In this study, a different perspective of documentary film was introduced and the expectations for documentary film in today's world were presented through an assessment of the basic definitions, approaches and evaluations applied to date to documentary film. Documentary film is a reflection of realities; however it should not be forgotten that those realities are reflected after having been recorded with technology and filtered through the human mind. Documentary film is an artistic medium; this leads to the conclusion that it is subject to design and aesthetics. Cinema takes elements from older arts and narrative style structure from literature and theater. Dramatic structure, the cornerstone of literature and theater, is also one of the essential building blocks of documentary film. In this study, concrete examples of how dramatic structure can be applied in documentary film are presented and evaluated through the selected documentary films of Iranian cinema. Thus, it has been asserted that dramatic structure, contrary to popular belief, does not overshadow reality, but functions as a way to present it more effectively.Key words: Documentary film, dramatic structure, reality, Iranian Cinema.
