In this thesis, UMTS core network design has been explained. For this reason, circuit switched and packet switched networks which can be used in core networks has been investigated in details. Also ATM based transport network technology investigated in details. In this investigations, mobile network evolutions phases has been described and UMTS network elements and network interfaces have been introduced. Also traffic calculations for both circuit switched and packet switched services have been explained. Planning and dimensioning of core network have been considered and the protocols used in the core network described. In a network which evolved from second generation communication technologies, using a ATM based common transport plane for circuit switched and packet switched services reduce network costs. Also it paves the way of transition to IP based systems. In this thesis, example of UMTS core network has been designed. ATM has been selected as a transport technology in order to design the user plane of the core network. Design phases and traffic calculations have been explained step by step. Required node and backbone trunk numbers have been given as a result of the design.
