ABSTRACT PRODUCTIVITY ANALYSIS IN THE IRON AND STEEL PLANTS AND AN APPLICATION IN 1SDEMÎR Ismail BARIN Çukurova University Institute of Social Sciences Departmant of Businees, M.S. Thesis Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Hüseyin C'ZSEN The objective of this study is twofold: First, to evaluate the production activities through productivity analysis, and second, to determine main factors affecting productivity in İskenderun Iron and Steel Plants (ÎSDEMÎR). Different methods of analysis were applied to provide answers toward the objectives of the study. First, the utilisation of the resources investigated by measuring input and output of the production units, according to the model established at ISDEMIR. Partial and total factor productivity ratios were determined for the five activity periods between 1984 and 1988. The fluctuation in the productivity levels of the 1SDEPİÎR production units were found by comparing them with the inde* numbers. The results indicated that increase in productivity was insufficient, and the input consumption was exceeding the amount planned. Second, main factors affecting the productivity and their effects on the productivity fluctuation were analyzed. Additionally, analysis of the effects of the factors on the Vlllabor productivity were included in this part. A direct approach based on the managers', engineers', and foremen' evaluation of the subject was chosen to determine and interpret the personal experiences in the production units. Data obtained through the questionnaire analyzed by using Microstatistics (Microstat) computer program. Data analysis was conducted for the ISDEMIR plant in general as well as the different production units and occupational groups. The study was organized in the following order: Chapter I included the frame, scope, statement of objectives, definition of terms, restrictions to the study, organizetion of the study, and methodology used. In Chapter II previous studies related to this research were reviewed and discussed. Chapter III included a theoritical treatment of conceptual frame of the study. Chapter IV dealt with the ÎSDEM1R steel plant and the production factors used in the measurement of productivity in detail. In Chapter V a case study and the results of this study were presented. In Chapter VI results of the study were evaluated and some recommendations were made in order to increase the utilization of input. Finally, in Chapter VII, conclusions were drawn, and recommendations for further studies were made. Vlll.

ÖZET DEMIR-ÇEL1K SANAYİİ İSLETMELERİMDE VERİMLİLİK ANALİZİ VE ISDEMİR'DE BİR UYGULAMA İsmail BARIN Çukurova üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü işletme Anabil im Dalı, Master Tezi Tez Yöneticisi: Prof, Dr. Hüseyin ÖZGEN Bu çalışmanın amacı, İskenderun Demir-Çelik işletmelerin deki (İSDEMIR) üretim faaliyetlerini verimlilik analizi yönte miyle değerlendirmek ve verimliliği etkileyen önemli faktörleri tespit etmektir.
