Mathematical critical power (CP) defines `the upper boundary of heavy exercise domain` and represents `the highest power output that is sustainable for a very long time without fatigue`. Linear total-work (CPlin-work), linear-1/time (CPlin-1/t), nonlinear-2 (CP2-hyp), nonlinear-3 (CP3-hyp) and exponential (CPexp) functions have been widely used mathematical models to estimate the CP. Moreover, the CP can be obtained by the sum of the smallest coefficient of variations (CPfit). Although there are several studies on the validity of CP, none have been conducted to test its accuracy based on the physiological basis of the CP. This study therefore aimed at evaluating its validity based on critical threshold (CT) concept accepted as `the highest exercise intensity where VO2 can be stabilized before reaching 95% of VO2max`. 14 well-trained male cyclists (VO2max: 65.88±4.79 mL·min-1·kg-1 and PO: 372.85±63.11) participated in this study. The ventilatory threshold (VT) and respiratory compensation point (RCP) of each cyclist were evaluated by an incremental test. VO2max values were analysed by constant-load verification phases. CP values were estimated by four exhaustive severe-intensity exercises lasting between 2 and 10 minutes. Cyclists' individual CT values were found through several constant-load exercises to volitional exhaustion. According to results, only the CPexp could successfully estimate the power output (323.8±46.84 vs. 325.71±43.09 W; p=0.619), VO2 response (61.38±4.24 vs. 61.88±4.67 mL·min-1·kg-1; p=0.795) and time to limit (15.41±11.18 vs. 13.6±4.33 minutes; p=0.609) values corresponding to physiological CT. Moreover, CPexp corresponded to the RCP (327.35±44.51 W; p=0.357), while the CP3-hyp was equal to the VT (286.01±46.36 vs. 278.25±37.59 W; p=0.246). In conclusion, this study shows that the CPexp is the best mathematical assumption amongst the other mathematical models, and the RCP can be a practical way to predict a power output corresponding to the CT.
