It is reported that mothers who have a baby in the neonatal intensive care unit have high stress and anxiety levels and that the amount of breast milk is affected negatively. This study was planned as a randomized controlled experimental study in order to determine the effect of music listening to mothers who had premature babies. The sample of the study consisted of 20 randomly selected mothers and 20 control group mothers of the newborns who were hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of two university hospitals in Istanbul between November 2017 and November 2018. On the first day, all mothers were given milking training with pump. Mothers in the experimental group between the second and fourth days 11.00 and 16.00 two sessions 15 minutes of listening to music and milking with the pump, milk to the control group mothers were milked only two sessions. Spielberg State Trait Anxiety Inventory and salivary cortisol test were performed in the first and last days of the study to evaluate the stress levels of the mothers. The mean age of the mothers who participated in the study was 28.5 ± 5.3 years, the mean gestational age was 32.21 ± 2.26 years and the mean birth weight of newborns was 1748 ± 533.4 gr. The state and total anxiety scores of the music group decreased statistically (p <0.05). There was no difference between the amounts of breastmilk and mothers of the control group and the music group. However, the daily increase in the amount of breast milk in the music group increased after the third day compared to the control group (p <0.001). The final test saliva cortisol levels of the mothers of the music group were lower than the control group but there was no statistically significant difference between the groups (p> 0.05). In addition, the final test cortisol levels of the mothers of the music group decreased statistically (p <0.05).It is recommended to use music to help loosen premature mothers in the NICU and to support the amount of breastmilk.
